Tulum & River of the Underworld
Visit the Tulum archaeological site and immerse yourself in the life of the ancient Mayans on the stunning Caribbean coast. This Mayan site was still inhabited when the Spanish first set foot on the Mexican mainland. Its location directly on the sea and the then-unusual complete enclosure by a thick wall are unique. The turquoise waters of the sea in the background of what is arguably the most beautifully situated ancient Mayan city provide a breathtaking backdrop for taking unforgettable vacation photos, in addition to listening to the historical explanations from your guide.
After a drive through the jungle, discover the wonderful and fascinating underworld of the Maya. A visit to the cenotes is an absolute must. These caves are found only in this region and were, and still are, very important to Mayan culture. The cenotes (Dzonot in the Mayan language) are entrances to the world's longest underground river system, which served, and still serves, as a water supply for the surrounding Mayan villages. In the past, the Maya did not enter these caves, as they considered them gateways to the underworld, home to evil gods and the dead.
There are different types: open, closed and also cave-like systems.
On this tour, you will explore a stalactite cave located on a secluded Mayan ranch, whose jungle grounds cover 52 hectares. An entrance to a cave system was discovered here in 1999. The owner recently discovered two more cenotes, which are not yet open to the public. Traverse the wild landscape and discover, on foot and sometimes by swimming, the numerous cave formations, comprised of a breathtaking variety of stalagmites and stalagcts.
Afterwards, enjoy freshly grilled local specialties. Don't miss the opportunity to help prepare Mexican side dishes and take some recipes home with you.
